Terraform Import Existing Resources
Learn how Terraform import works, when to use it, what it does and does not do, and how to safely bring manually created cloud resources into Terraform state.
What is terraform import?
terraform import connects an existing real-world resource to a Terraform resource address in state. It does not automatically write complete Terraform configuration for you in older workflows, so you must ensure the code matches the real resource.
Basic import flow
- Write the resource block in Terraform.
- Find the real resource ID.
- Run terraform import .
- Run terraform plan .
- Adjust configuration until the plan is clean.
Example command
terraform import aws_instance.web i-0123456789abcdef0
After import
terraform plan
If Terraform wants to change many values, your configuration does not match the imported resource yet.
Common mistakes
- Thinking import creates full Terraform files automatically.
- Importing into the wrong workspace or backend.
- Using the wrong resource ID.
- Applying immediately without checking plan.
- Not backing up state before important imports.
Best practices
- Import one resource at a time.
- Use clear resource names.
- Run plan after every import.
- Document imported resources.
- Use version control for Terraform configuration.
