GitLab Interview Questions and Real-Time Scenarios

Prepare for GitLab CI/CD interviews with practical questions, answers, and real-time DevOps scenarios covering pipelines, YAML, runners, variables, Docker, Kubernetes, security, releases, and troubleshooting.

Quick answer

Know the basics

Understand pipelines, stages, jobs, runners, artifacts, cache, variables, and rules.

Explain real issues

Be ready for stuck jobs, YAML errors, missing variables, Docker failures, and deployment problems.

Think security

Explain protected branches, variables, runners, approvals, secret detection, and production safety.

Beginner GitLab interview questions

1. What is GitLab CI/CD?

GitLab CI/CD is GitLab’s automation system for building, testing, securing, packaging, and deploying applications using pipeline configuration.

2. What is .gitlab-ci.yml ?

It is the YAML file used to define GitLab CI/CD jobs, stages, scripts, variables, artifacts, cache, rules, and deployment behavior.

3. What is a GitLab Runner?

A GitLab Runner is the agent that executes CI/CD jobs and sends results back to GitLab.

Intermediate questions

4. Difference between cache and artifacts?

Cache speeds up dependency downloads. Artifacts store required output or reports that later jobs or users need.

5. What are protected variables?

Protected variables are available only to protected branches or tags, making them useful for production secrets.

6. What is rules used for?

rules controls when a job should run, such as only on merge requests, main branch, schedules, tags, or manual deployments.

Advanced questions

7. How do you secure production deployment?

Use protected branches, protected variables, protected runners, manual jobs, approval rules, least-privilege credentials, and rollout verification.

8. How do you optimize a slow GitLab pipeline?

Analyze slow jobs, reduce unnecessary runs, use cache, artifacts, needs , parallel jobs, smaller Docker images, and path-based rules.

9. How do you design a monorepo pipeline?

Use rules:changes , child pipelines, shared templates, folder-level cache keys, and deploy only affected services.

Real-time scenarios

ScenarioLikely causeAnswer approach
Job stuck in pendingNo matching runner or tag mismatchCheck runner status, tags, protection, and project runner settings.
Variable is emptyWrong name or protected variable on unprotected branchCheck exact variable key and branch protection.
Artifact not foundWrong path or expired artifactCheck artifact paths, job output, and expiry.
Docker push failedRegistry auth or permission issueCheck registry variables, token scopes, and login command.
Kubernetes rollout failedImage pull, RBAC, pod readiness, or config issueCheck rollout status, pod logs, events, and RBAC.

Scenario: pipeline should run only for changed frontend files

frontend_tests: script: - cd apps/frontend - npm test rules: - changes: - apps/frontend/**/*

Scenario: manual production deployment

deploy_production: stage: deploy script: - echo "Deploying production" environment: name: production rules: - if: '$CI_COMMIT_BRANCH == "main"' when: manual - when: never

Common interview mistakes

  • Explaining definitions only without real examples.
  • Confusing cache and artifacts.
  • Ignoring runner security.
  • Not mentioning protected variables for production.
  • Not explaining how to troubleshoot job logs.

Preparation checklist

  • Practice writing small pipelines.
  • Understand runners and tags.
  • Know variables, secrets, artifacts, cache, rules, and environments.
  • Review Docker and Kubernetes deployment examples.
  • Prepare real incidents you solved or can explain.
